On the IT side, Boxer allows admins to configure and manage security policies at a granular level via its use of containerization, built-in compliance, and data leakage protection. Boxer also has a predictive folders feature that incorporates aspects of machine learning in order to make folder suggestions based on past user actions. On the user side, Boxer features include integrated calendar access, customizable settings and optional bulk action functionality.

VMware Boxer takes those security and interface features and wraps them into one enterprise app that Boxer founder and current VMware VP Andrew Eye says is "the most customizable email app on in market today." But the startup was also credited with the creation of a UX which VMware CTO Noah Wasmer described as "precise and blazing fast."

VMware was drawn to Boxer by its personal information management (PIM) product for iOS and Android devices, which uses a container approach to app management and security. When VMware bought Boxer, the goal was to merge the startup with AirWatch to bolster VMware's suite of enterprise mobility management services revolving around secure access to email, content and apps.
